Hâlau Makana O Hula School of Polynesian Arts is a separate entity of KDC, but works hand in hand, to provide the best classes for KDC students. Run and directed by Kumu Hula Kawika (David) Tonga, HMOH is the only official hâlau (cultural hula school) in the Kansas City area. Kumu Kawika just recently graduated from his studies in Hula this past July (2013), and is now released from his kumu (master teacher of hula) to fly on his own. He follows the strict protocols, and rules of hula, and teaches them to anyone interested. He often teaches - "Hula is not a genre of dance, even though the literal translation of hula is 'dance.' It's a lot more than dance, it's a lifestyle, it's a culture, therefore has strict protocols, and rules." The overall goal of HMOH is to ensure the "true" entity of Hula exists within those interested, and is in full force, right in Independence (the heart of America)....
